Join us for a truly memorable hiking day trip, starting with a visit to somewhere a little different – and somewhere most people have never been. We’ll begin the day at Santuario Cueva Santa in Altura (Entrance Free) a remarkable church carved directly into the rock of a natural cave. It’s a hidden gem that few people realise exists, despite being less than an hour from Valencia. A fascinating and atmospheric place to explore before the day’s adventure really begins.
After a relaxed morning coffee in the charming Plaza Mayor of Altura, we’ll set off on our hike to Castillo del Castro. This stunning 8km route starts by winding through a dramatic, steep-sided sandstone ravine, before leading us into a beautiful forest of cork oak trees. The reward at the top is well worth the effort: the ruins of Castillo del Castro, perched high on a hilltop, offering spectacular panoramic views stretching inland and all the way to the sea. With upsand downs there is a total ascent of 540 meters. A perfect day combining hidden history, beautiful landscapes, and an unforgettable hike.

Hike the Mola de Segart & Discover the Mysterious Dragon of Calderona
Join us on an unforgettable day out exploring one of the most iconic hikes in the Sierra Calderona Natural Park — the stunning Mola de Segart, affectionately known as “The Mola.” This striking 600-meter-high peak, shaped like a jagged tooth, towers above the town of Sagunto and offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the region.
We’ll combine this exhilarating walk with a visit to one of the area’s most curious and surreal sights: the Dragon of Calderona. Just a 45-minute drive away, this bizarre and beautiful building was originally created as an art gallery in 2005 but was tragically destroyed by fire in 2014. Since then, a collective of visionary artists has reclaimed and reimagined it as a working studio. While we won’t be entering the building, the fantasy-like exterior alone is worth the visit — perfect for photos and sparking the imagination.
After our visit, we’ll enjoy a relaxing coffee stop in the charming village of Gilet, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere before heading to the trailhead.
The hike itself is moderate level, about 10 kilometers in total with a 450-meter ascent. The final stretch to the summit is a bit steep, but the 360º views from the top are absolutely worth the effort.
This is a unique mix of natural beauty, quirky architecture, and local charm — perfect for adventure seekers, art lovers, and anyone looking to experience something different in the Valencian countryside.

Explore Spain’s Secret Grand Canyon – Rambla de Barrachina, Teruel
Did you know Spain has its very own Grand Canyon? So convincing is the landscape of the Rambla de Barrachina near Teruel that it’s often used as a filming location instead of flying all the way to Arizona. Towering red cliffs, dramatic ridgelines, and sweeping views make this a truly unforgettable adventure—without the long-haul flight.
Our 7km circular hike is designed to be easy and enjoyable, with only around 150m of ascent. We take a unique route that maximizes your time walking above the canyons, giving you jaw-dropping panoramic views rather than just staring up at walls of rock.
We’ll begin by following the ridge of one of the canyons to a junction, then climb gently up to La Muela de Teruel—a historic high point that was once the site of a dramatic Civil War battle. From there, we loop back down via a different trail that overlooks the section we first walked up, offering a completely new perspective of the stunning red-rock scenery.
Have a look at this short video of a previous hike we did there
To finish the day, we’ll head into Teruel City for a well-earned drink in the charming Plaza del Torico—a perfect way to relax and soak in the atmosphere of this beautiful, historic town.

Weekend in Viallajosa, South Alicant 6/7 March (One Place Left)
Join us for a special overnight weekend adventure to the southern part of Alicante — a region that’s just a little too far to fully enjoy in a single day. This carefully chosen early-March date is no accident: after years of running trips, I’ve learned that Valencia can be very lively on Sunday mornings during Fallas… so we’ll be sleeping peacefully by the sea instead.
Our base for the night will be the beautiful coastal town of Villajoyosa, famous for its colourful houses, relaxed atmosphere, and one of the cleanest beaches on the Costa Blanca.
Day 1 – Mountains, Culture & Big Views
We depart Valencia and head south to Alcoy, stopping for morning coffee in one of Alicante’s most striking inland cities. After parking, we’ll walk across the dramatic viaduct spanning the deep ravine that cuts through the city, before visiting the impressive Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Coffee will be enjoyed in the elegant Plaza de Dins, a charming square that feels like a miniature Plaza Mayor in Madrid.
From here, we continue to the highlight hike of the day: Cabeçó d’Or, widely regarded as the second most emblematic mountain walk in the province after Puig Campana.
- Distance: 10.5 km circular route
- Start: 480 m above sea level
- Summit: 1,209 m
The hike follows a dramatic ridge where the contrast on each side is unforgettable. One side reveals sharp, knife-like rock formations more typical of Murcia, while the other opens up to sweeping coastal views from Peñón de Ifach all the way to the Murcia border. Even if you choose not to climb to the final summit, the views from the ridge at 1,150 m are just as spectacular.
After the hike, we head to Villajoyosa, our home for the night. Accommodation is in a centrally located pension, with en-suite rooms (room only). Enjoy a stroll along the beach, dinner in town, and a relaxed coastal evening.
Day 2 – Coastal Paths & Easy Walking
Sunday is all about taking it slower.
We start with breakfast by the beach, before driving inland to the Pasarela de Relleu. This scenic 3.5 km walk is often called the “Mini Caminito del Rey” — inspired by the famous Andalusian route. It features a spectacular 1 km elevated boardwalk suspended above a ravine, including glass-bottom sections.
- Entrance fee: €3.50 (not included)
- More info: https://pasareladerelleu.es/
Back on the coast, we finish with a relaxed walk from Cala de Xarco, climbing gently up to the watchtower before enjoying a picnic lunch with stunning sea views.
To round off the weekend in style, we’ll stop for a classy drink at the Mascarat Yacht Club before returning to Valencia.
